Rivers State APC dismisses the recent defection of deputy governor Ikuru to PDP

altMEMBERS of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State believe the recent defection of the deputy governor Tele Ikuru to the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) will not have any effect on their electoral fortunes.

Over the weekend, Mr Ikuru, who has been Governor Rotimi Amaechi's deputy since 2007 and joined him to leave the PDP for the APC, announced that he was returning to his old party. Following his defection, Mr Ikuru will now support the PDP's governorship candidate in Rivers State former education minister Nyesom Wike.

However, the APC described his defection as a mere scratch on the surface of the party’s towering popularity in the state. Hon Esuku, a leading APC member in Andoni, Mr Ikuru's  home town, described the deputy governor as an appendage of the PDP national organising secretary, Prince Uchewaju Secondus.

He added that Mr Ikuru’s defection was long expected after he failed to secure the governorship ticket on the platform of the APC. According to Hon Esuku, deputy governor Ikuru’s defection was to save him from the embarrassment he and Secondus would receive on election day since their plan to secure the APC governorship ticket did not materialise.

“This is the first time that election results will be determined by actual followership as the electorate will be expected to cast their votes using their PVC under the card reader system. I urge all our party faithful to ignore Ikuru and ensure victory for APC’s presidential candidate General Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday and Peterside on April 11."

Deputy governor, Ikuru had described the APC as a party of rebels, insurgents and anarchists, clothed in robes of pretence and deceit.  He said he could no longer continue to mortgage his conscience as he had come to see the true nature of the APC.

“Ever since, as the true nature and motives of APC were unveiled, I have continued to twist and turn in extreme mental and emotional agony. The more I struggle to belong, the more the Rivers man in me rejects the APC. After carefully studying, interacting and analysing the leadership of the party, I have come to the sad conclusion that the APC is a party of rebels, insurgents and anarchists, clothed in robes of pretence and deceit.

"The APC is a party founded on deception and it thrives on unholy propaganda and falsehood. I therefore, on behalf of my teeming supporters and my humble self, denounce the APC and we all jointly and severally resign our membership of the APC,” Mr Ikuru said.

He noted that over the past 48 years, people of the Niger Delta had been supporting leaders from other parts of the country with their votes and resources and wondered why people of the same region would be the ones to persecute their own. He urged all his supporters and the good people of Rivers State to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan in the forthcoming elections.

Governor  Amaechi, has described as shocking the reasons advanced by his deputy for leaving the APC. Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, the media director of the PDP's presidential campaign said the party was happy to receive Mr Ikuru back into its family and urged other key leaders of the APC to abandon the ranks of the doomed party and to join the PDP.
