Akwa Ibom PDP rocked as former governor Attah endorses APC governorship candidate

altAKWA Ibom State's chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has been rocked the recent decision by some of its senior members to support the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state including a former governor Obong Victor Attah.

In what looks like a major setback for the local chapter, Obong Attah, who is a member of the PDP's board of trustees, attended the APC's recent rally at Akwa Ibom and endorsed its governorship candidate Obong Okon Umana. Obong Attah told the mammoth crowd that his decision to support Mr Umunna was based on the desire for change in Akwa Ibom.

He added that as a political leader in the state, he had to align himself with the majority of the people who want Mr Umana as their governor. Former secretary to the state government Emmanuel Udom, is the PDP gubernatorial candidate in the state and is being backed by incumbent governor Godswill Akpabio.

Obong Attah said that despite the fact that he is a member of PDP, it was his duty to identify with the wishes of the people of Akwa Ibom. He also urged the people to vote for APC senatorial candidate who is contesting against Governor Akpabio, who he accused of breaching the agreement of zoning in the state because of his selfish interest.

Also in attendance at the rally was founding member of PDP, Dan Etete, who also enjoined the people to vote massively for APC candidates because they are the choice of the people in the state. Mr Etete urged the people to ensure that they vote and protect their votes by staying behind to watch the counting of their votes in various polling booths to avoid rigging on the day of the election.

It was not certain whether Obong Attah and Mr Etete have dumped from PDP to join APC but with their appearance at the rally, it shows that there is a crack in PDP over the choice of their governorship candidate. Several PDP members on the state have been unhappy with the way in which the process was handled, alleging that Mr Udom was imposed on them against the wishes of the people by Governor Akpabio.
